How to obtain the Compostela on the Camino de Santiago by bike?

Unlike the 100 km required for those pilgrims who travel the Camino on foot, doing the Camino de Santiago by bicycle involves pedalling a minimum of 200 km to get the Compostela.

Like the credential for pilgrims on foot, bicigrinos must stamp it at each stage. Once you arrive in Santiago, you must present your credential properly stamped at the Pilgrim’s Office to obtain the Compostela, the certification granted to those pilgrims who have completed any of the official routes of the Camino.

Tips and frequently asked questions if you are going to do the Camino by bike

The physical preparation to do the Camino de Santiago by bike is very important, so we recommend a previous training to avoid that this adventure becomes an exhausting experience.

It is advisable to start training at least two months before your trip, gradually increasing the intensity and duration of your workouts. In addition to cycling, it will also be useful to include strength and flexibility exercises in your training routine to prepare your body for the demands of the Camino.

In addition to your bike, there is other equipment that you will also need to carry on your route:

Bike repair kit. This equipment can help you to keep your bike in good condition throughout the trip. In it you can carry screwdrivers, spare inner tubes or portable inflators. In case of unforeseen events, our bike rental service includes this kit so that you can solve any problem with your bike.
Cycling clothes. This type of clothing will make your trip more comfortable and we recommend that you wear light, breathable clothing and cycling gloves to protect your hands.
Helmet. Your safety is essential so wear a helmet that is in good condition and fits properly on your head.
Saddlebags. They are the ideal option for carrying your luggage along the route, as they allow you to balance your weight and contribute to a more comfortable experience than if you were walking the route. However, saddlebags can make the Camino more complicated, especially on more demanding stages, so we recommend that you also request a backpack transfer between stages.
Other essential equipment. It is also advisable to carry a bottle of water, sunscreen, sunglasses and a bicycle light, especially for the stages that take place at dawn and dusk.

If you decide to do the Camino de Santiago by bike, you must comply with a series of traffic rules to ensure your safety during the route.

First of all, as far as possible, you should ride on cycle lanes and verges, always keeping in a single file line. This is especially important on stretches with no visibility. Also, as you approach areas with pedestrians, it is advisable to leave a distance of 1.50 metres when overtaking them.

The use of helmets is compulsory on interurban roads for pilgrims of all ages, as well as the use of reflective elements and corresponding lighting when riding at night, through tunnels or in poor visibility conditions.

Spring and autumn are the best times to walk the Camino. In these seasons, temperatures are mild and pleasant, making it easier to walk long distances without being exposed to extremes of heat and cold.

In addition, the Camino is especially popular in summer, so if you decide to walk during spring and autumn you will avoid the crowds and enjoy a more peaceful experience.

Like the route for pilgrims who do the Camino on foot, the route is marked by cairns and yellow arrows.

If you do the Camino de Santiago by bicycle, it is possible that in some sections you may need to turn off onto the road to continue the route. However, you will find perfect signposting to continue the route with ease.

In addition, the Camino is linked to the Eurovelo Route, a long-distance cycling network that crosses Europe. Specifically, Route 3, also known as the Pilgrims’ Route, which connects Trondheim, in Norway, with Santiago de Compostela, shares certain sections with the French Way.
