Stage 69: Lucca-Altopascio

The sixty-ninth stage of the Via Francigena takes pilgrims from the charming city of Lucca to Altopascio. Towns through which the stage takes place

  • Lucca: The stage begins in Lucca, a city surrounded by impressive Renaissance walls. Pilgrims can explore the narrow cobblestone streets, Piazza dell’Anfiteatro and St. Martin’s Cathedral before setting out on their journey.
  • Capannori: On the way to Altopascio, pilgrims can pass through Capannori, a picturesque Tuscan village with its colorful houses and rural charm. The central square and the local church are highlights.
  • Altopascio: The stage concludes in Altopascio, known for its medieval hospital, the Spedale di San Jacopo, which offered shelter and care to pilgrims in the Middle Ages. The town also has a Romanesque church, San Jacopo, which is worth visiting.
