Stage 9: Padrón-Santiago de Compostela

The ninth stage of the Route of Father Sarmiento marks the final stretch of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. This section offers walkers a mix of rural environments, small villages and, finally, the majesty of the capital of Compostela. Excitement and anticipation build as pilgrims approach their final destination.

Towns through which the stage takes place

  • Iria Flavia: This stage can take pilgrims through Iria Flavia, a town linked to Jacobean history. The Church of Santa María de Adina stands out, which houses the tomb of Rosalía de Castro, a prominent Galician writer.
  • Teo: On the way to Santiago, walkers can pass through Teo, a small municipality with rural charm. The green landscape and traditional buildings contribute to the atmosphere of the stage.
  • Santiago de Compostela: The stage culminates in the historic Santiago de Compostela, the spiritual and cultural heart of Galicia. The city is home to the majestic Cathedral of Santiago, a desired destination for pilgrims. Pilgrims are welcomed in the Plaza del Obradoiro, where they can enjoy the impressive façade of the cathedral.

Monuments to see along the route

  • Santiago de Compostela Cathedral: This architectural jewel is the most iconic symbol of the Camino de Santiago. Pilgrims can explore the cathedral and embrace the statue of the apostle Saint James on the main altar. The apostle’s tomb is a highlight for many pilgrims.
  • Plaza del Obradoiro: Located in front of the cathedral, this square is the heart of Santiago and the place where many pilgrims end their trip. The buildings that surround the square, including the Raxoi Palace and the Hostal de los Reyes Católicos, add to the grandeur of the place.
  • Old Town of Santiago: Pilgrims can stroll through the narrow cobblestone streets of the old town, discovering charming corners, squares and historic buildings. Rúa do Franco is known for its taverns and restaurants, offering walkers the opportunity to celebrate their achievement.

The ninth stage is an exciting close for pilgrims, giving them the satisfaction of having completed their journey and allowing them to immerse themselves in the cultural and spiritual richness of Santiago de Compostela.
