Stage 3: Azambuja-Santarém

The third stage of the Portuguese Way from Lisbon takes pilgrims from Azambuja to Santarém, passing through a mixture of rural landscapes, farmland and small villages. This stage offers pilgrims an experience of peace and serenity, with quiet roads and paths winding through the Portuguese countryside.

Villages through which the stage passes:

  • Azambuja: Starting point of the stage, Azambuja is a charming village with a rich agricultural history. You can explore its old town and historical monuments before starting the ride to Santarém.
  • Vale do Paraíso: On the way to Santarém, pilgrims pass through the picturesque village of Vale do Paraíso, known for its beautiful scenery and rural atmosphere.
  • Santarém: The stage ends in Santarém, a historic city known as the “Capital of Gothic” in Portugal. You will be able to explore its old town, visit its historical monuments and enjoy the impressive Gothic architecture of its churches and buildings.

Monuments to see along the route:

  • Church of Our Lady of the Assumption: In Azambuja, pilgrims can visit this 16th century church, known for its Manueline architecture and impressive high altar.
  • Church of São João Baptista: In Vale do Paraíso, this 17th century church can be admired, with its beautiful facade and rich interior decoration.
  • Santarém Cathedral: In Santarém you can visit this impressive Gothic cathedral dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception. Built in the 13th century, the cathedral is an important historical monument and offers panoramic views of the city from its tower.
