Stage 2: Vila Franca de Xira-Azambuja

The second stage of the Portuguese Way from Lisbon leads pilgrims from Vila Franca de Xira to Azambuja, crossing a mix of rural landscapes and small villages.   • Vila Franca de Xira: Starting point of the stage, Vila Franca de Xira is a historic town with a rich cultural tradition and a lively urban life. You can explore its cobblestone streets, visit its historical monuments and enjoy the local gastronomy before starting your hike.
  • Alhandra: On the way to Azambuja, you will pass through the charming riverside village of Alhandra, known for its picturesque landscape and traditional architecture.
  • Azambuja: The stage ends in Azambuja, a historic town with a rich agricultural history. You can explore its old town, visit its historical monuments and enjoy authentic Portuguese hospitality in its restaurants and cafes.

  • Vila Franca de Xira Mother Church: this 18th century church is an important historical monument in Vila de Franca de Xira, known for its baroque architecture and rich interior decoration.
  • Bridge over the Tagus River: On the way to Azambuja, pilgrims cross the Tagus River via an impressive bridge, which offers panoramic views of the river and the surrounding area.
  • Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Assumption: In Azambuja, pilgrims can visit this ancient religious sanctuary, dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
