Walk the Portuguese Way or Camino Portugués, from Porto to Santiago

If you have at least two weeks to walk the Camino Portugués, why don’t you start in Porto? This way, you will be able to discover one of the most important cities of Portugal, really well known because of its old quarter (a World Heritage Site since 1996), its wine, or its promenade along the Duero river.

But there is even more, the Camino Portugués will take you to discover really nice towns in Northern Portugal, such as Barcelos or Ponte da Lima. Moreover, we will be able to taste its delicious gastronomy, contemplate its landscapes…

The boarder with Galicia (Spain) is marked by the bridge that connects Valença do Minho (Portugal) and Tui (Spain). From this point up to Santiago de Compostela, the Portuguese Way walk continues through Galicia region. Pilgrims walking this trail will discover really nice Galician towns, such as Tui, Pontevedra or Caldas de Reis.

Please note that the minimum requited to get the certificate is 100 km. If you do not have enough time, we suggest you to walk the last 100 km of the Portuguese Way, from Tui to Santiago de Compostela.

With our assistance, it will be really easy to complete the last 200 km of the Camino Portugués.

Arrival in Porto

O Porto – Fajozes (22 km)

We will start this walking day in the Cathedral of Porto. After leaving behind the outskirts of Porto, we will start walking through small rural areas.

Fajozes - Arcos (11 km)

This is one of the shortest walking days, just 11 km from Fajozes to Arcos. We will walk through small forests.

Arcos - Barcelos (20 km)

This stretch combines rural tracks and paved roads. In Barcelos, end of the stage, we can enjoy a great historical and cultural heritage.

Barcelos - Ponte da Lima (32 km)

The track will take us to rural areas in inland Portugal, until we reach Ponte da Lima. It is one of the most important cities of Portugal.

Ponte da Lima - Rubiaes (18 km)

Be ready from some ups downs, as this walking day is quite challenging. On the way, we will see chapels, and a lot of symbols related to the Camino de Santiago.

Rubiaes - Tui (20 km)

The Camino de Santiago will finally take us to Galicia region. The boarder is marked by the bridge that connects Valença do Minho (Portugal) and Tui (Spain).

Tui– O Porriño (18 km)

Tui, the first town in Spain, marks the beginning of the last 100 km of the Portuguese Way. In fact, most of the pilgrims walking this route, start their adventure in Tui. The are really nice spots in Tui that we strongly recommend to visit before heading off to O Porriño. For example, the Cathedral, or the bridge.

O Porriño – Redondela (16 km)

Be ready for some ups and downs on the way from O Porriño to Redondela. The walk is a bit more challenging that the previous days, however, it offers amazing views of the sea. The centre of Redondela is small, and the number of accommodations for pilgrims is limited. There are a few hotels spread on the way to Arcade (right on the Camino de Santiago).

Redondela – Pontevedra (19,8 km)

Once in Redondela, the path is the same as the Portuguese Coastal Way (an alternative route through the coast). For these reason, there could be more pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela. Some of the highlights of the day: the Roman Bridge in Pontesampaio or the ascent to a Canicouva. Once in Pontevedra, we strongly recommend you to visit La Peregrina Church, and the historical quarter.

Pontevedra – Caldas de Rei (21,5 km)

This is a pleasant walking day, quite flat, through rural areas. On the way from Pontevedra to Caldas de Rei (in Barro) you can stop at the Natural Park of Rio Barosa, and discover its mills and cascades. Caldas de Reis is very popular because of its thermal spring waters. Why not taking a quick bath after the walk?

Caldas de Rei – Padrón (18,6 km)

The walk will take us to Padrón. Did you know that Padrón, according to the legend, was the first piece of land spotted by the sailors that were transporting the remains of St James the Apostle, from their boat? It is also the home town of one of the most popular Galician writers, Rosalía de Castro.

TE RECOMENDAMOS ESTA RUTA SI...

The Portuguese Way from Porto is recommended for those pilgrims who are looking for a less visited route, but equally social, and who have the time to walk 200km.

Cómo llegar

Desde Oporto airport

car or cab: It is 12km to the city center, approximately 25 minutes drive.
subway: Take the purple E subway line from the airport to Trindade station. Frequency 30′ and with an estimated duration of 35′. For timetables and more information visit: https://www.oporto.net/metro

Desde Vigo airport

Car or cab: It is 160km, during a journey of approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes.
bus: Take the bus (LINE A) from Vigo Airport to Urzaiz stop (Estación / Cotomondongo wall). Frequency every 30′. Another option is to take a cab to the station (10 minutes). Once there, we can take a bus (ALSA) to Oporto (2h trip). For schedules and more information visit: www.vitrasa.es and www.alsa.es
train: Take the bus (LINE A) from Vigo Airport to Urzaiz 13 stop. Frequency every 30′. Walk for 10 minutes to the train station Vigo Guixar. Once there, we can take a train (Renfe) to Oporto (2h and 20 minutes). For schedules and more information visit: www.vitrasa.es and www.renfe.com

Desde Lisbon Airport

car or cab: It is 315km, during a journey of approximately 3 hours.
bus: Take the subway (RED LINE) direction East (6 minutes ride). Frequency every 10′. Once there, we can take a bus to Oporto (3h and 30 minutes). For timetables and more information visit: https://www.metrolisboa.pt/ and https://rede-expressos.pt/es

Desde Santiago de Compostela Airport

Car or cab: 250km with an estimated duration of 5 hours and 30 minutes.
bus: Take the bus (LINE 6A) from Santiago de Compostela airport to the bus station. Frequency every 15′ and with an approximate duration of 20′. Another option is to take a cab to the station, with an estimated duration of 15′. Then, we must take a bus (ALSA) to Oporto (4h trip). train: Take the bus (LINE 6A) from Santiago de Compostela airport to the train station. Frequency every 15′ and with an approximate duration of 20′. Another option is to take a cab to the station, with an estimated duration of 15′. Then we will take a train to Vigo (journey time between 50 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes). Repetir es la mejor reseña No hay mejor opinión que repetir la experiencia. Mi primera experiencia con ellos fue en marzo y ahora en septiembre repetí y volveré a hacerlo. Atentos, cumplen todo, modifican lo que les pidas a capricho

Perfecta para tener un Buen Camino Muy buena experiencia, nos organizaron el camino francés desde Sarria tal y como les pedimos saliendo todo perfecto y según lo esperado.

Destacar que fuimos con un bebé y en todo alojamiento contamos con cuna tal y como habíamos pedido.

experiencia muy positiva Hice el camino frances desde sarria, todo muy bien organizado, a media pension,
tanto hoteles y pensiones bastante correctas.
algunos de ellos tenian restaurante, y desde luego es una ventaja, ya que al termino de la etapa del dia podias comer alli,
y sino te hacen un vale para comer muy cerca del alojamiento.
desde luego muy recomendable.
