Walk the full Portuguese Coastal Way, from Porto to Santiago

The Portuguese Coastal Way starts in Porto, same as the standard Portuguese Way. However, from this point both routes follow different paths up to Redondela (in Redondela, they merge together until Santiago de Compostela).

Those who decide to walk the Portuguese Coastal Way from Porto, will have the chance to discover really nice fishing villages in Northern Portugal, such as Povoa de Varzim, Esposende, Viana do Castelo, Vila Praia de Ancora… Same in Galicia, as the path passes by lovely towns like A Guarda, Baiona or Vigo.

The Portuguese Coastal Way is a new route, but is becoming really popular. Each year, more and more pilgrims decide to walk it because of its stunning landscapes and gastronomy.

Do not hesitate to take on this adventure, from Porto to Santiago following the coast line!

Arrival in Porto

Porto - Povoa de Varzim (27 km)

This walking day departs from the same place as the standard Portuguese Way, but both routes follow different paths onwards (one is on the coast, and the other one, inland). After leaving behind the outskirts of Porto, we will come over coastal areas and beaches, until reaching Povoa de Varzim.

Povoa de Varzim - Esposende (22 km)

We will continue our walk over the coast line, and the Camino will take us to lovely beaches and small costal villages.

Esposende - Viana do Castelo (24 km)

The walking day from Esponsende to Viana do Castelo combines rural tracks and paved roads. After crossing its bridge, which is a symbol of the town, we will arrive in Viana do Castelo.

Viana do Castelo - Vila Praia de Áncora (19 km)

This a quiet walking day. If you have enough time, you can take a quick swim on the beach when you arrive in Vila Praia de Ancora (if weather allows you to do so!).

Vila Praia de Áncora - A Guarda (13 km)

We will finally arrive in Galicia region, in Northern Spain, after a couple of days discovering Portugal. For this, is necessary to book a ticket with Xacobeo Transfer through their website www.xacobeotransfer.com or calling the following phone number +34 613011226. If you feel you can walk a bit more, you can continue to Oia.

A Guarda - Baiona (33 km)

This walking day is one of the longest of the route. It is possible to split this walking day in two, and stay in Oia, which is in between A Guarda and Baiona.

Baiona– Vigo (23 km)

The route begins in Baiona, a small town where the first news of the discovery of America was received. The caravel Pinta docked in its port when it came back from the new continent. The route will take you along the beaches of Nigrán and you will be able to admire the Cíes Islands. The landscape in the last kilometres, will become more urban, as you get into Vigo, the most populated town in Galicia.

Vigo – Redondela (15 km)

Pilgrims will be able to take in the impressive veiws of the Estuary of Vigo on the left. This walking day is a bit shorter and less intense, so you can enjoy a quick dip in once of the many beaches you come across from Vigo to Redondela.

Redondela – Pontevedra (20 km)

From this point up to Santiago, the path will be the same as the traditional Portuguese Camino, so you may see more Pilgrims on the way. Pontesampaio is a village which is worth seeing, it is interesting to learn about the historical events which took place there, and cross the Roman bridge over the Verdugo river. This stage ends in Pontevedra, a beautiful town which is famous due to its historical centre and its squares made of stone

Pontevedra – Caldas de Rei (21 km)

Our way out of Pontevedra will lead us back to the rural side of Galicia, so we will be able to enjoy the woods and streams. Many pilgrims stop in Barro to see the Natural Park of the Barosa River with its cascades and mills. Finally, we will arrive in Caldas de Reis, a town which is famous for its thermal spring waters and spa resorts.

Caldas de Rei – Padrón (19 km)

Today, the Camino passes peacefully through small villages, with dispersed houses along the route. Padrón is known as the first place on land spotted by the boat which carried the remains of Saint James the Apostle. Also, it is the birthplace of great authors like Rosalía de Castro or Camilo José Cela.

Recommended to those pilgrims who want to experience one of the most popular routes of the Camino de Santiago, enjoying the sea views of the Portuguese and Galician coast. The perfect option if you have enough time to walk the way from Oporto.

Desde Porto Airport

car or cab: It is 12km to the city center, approximately 25 minutes drive.
subway: Take the purple E subway line from the airport to Trindade station. Frequency 30′ and with an estimated duration of 35′. For timetables and more information visit: https://www.oporto.net/metro

Desde Vigo Airport

Cab car: It is 160km, during a journey of approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes.
bus: Take the bus (LINE A) from Vigo Airport to Urzaiz stop (Estación / Cotomondongo wall). Frequency every 30′. Another option is to take a cab to the station (10 minutes). Once there, we can take a bus (ALSA) to Oporto (2h trip). For schedules and more information visit: www.vitrasa.es and www.alsa.es
train: Take the bus (LINE A) from Vigo Airport to Urzaiz 13 stop. Frequency every 30′. Walk for 10 minutes to the train station Vigo Guixar. Once there, we can take a train (Renfe) to Oporto (2h and 20 minutes). For schedules and more information visit: www.vitrasa.es and www.renfe.com

Desde Lisbon Airport

car or cab: It is 315km, during a journey of approximately 3 hours.
bus: Take the subway (RED LINE) direction East (6 minutes ride). Frequency every 10′. Once there, we can take a bus to Oporto (3h and 30 minutes). For timetables and more information visit: https://www.metrolisboa.pt/ and https://rede-expressos.pt/es

Desde Santiago de Compostela Airport

Car or cab: 250km with an estimated duration of 5 hours and 30 minutes.
bus: Take the bus (LINE 6A) from Santiago de Compostela airport to the bus station. Frequency every 15′ and with an approximate duration of 20′. Another option is to take a cab to the station, with an estimated duration of 15′. Then, we must take a bus (ALSA) to Oporto (4h trip). train: Take the bus (LINE 6A) from Santiago de Compostela airport to the train station. Frequency every 15′ and with an approximate duration of 20′. Another option is to take a cab to the station, with an estimated duration of 15′. Then we will take a train to Vigo (journey time between 50 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes). Repetir es la mejor reseña No hay mejor opinión que repetir la experiencia. Mi primera experiencia con ellos fue en marzo y ahora en septiembre repetí y volveré a hacerlo. Atentos, cumplen todo, modifican lo que les pidas a capricho

Perfecta para tener un Buen Camino Muy buena experiencia, nos organizaron el camino francés desde Sarria tal y como les pedimos saliendo todo perfecto y según lo esperado.

Destacar que fuimos con un bebé y en todo alojamiento contamos con cuna tal y como habíamos pedido.

experiencia muy positiva Hice el camino frances desde sarria, todo muy bien organizado, a media pension,
tanto hoteles y pensiones bastante correctas.
algunos de ellos tenian restaurante, y desde luego es una ventaja, ya que al termino de la etapa del dia podias comer alli,
y sino te hacen un vale para comer muy cerca del alojamiento.
desde luego muy recomendable.
