The Muros & Noia way is one of the best kept secrets of the Camino de Santiago. Recently made official, it is a route chosen by pilgrims seeking to enjoy the sea, gastronomy, spectacular scenery and to connect with nature. One of the best options to escape from the overcrowded Jacobean routes.
Despite the importance of this route in the pilgrimage to Santiago during the Middle Ages, it wasn’t until December 15, 2020, that the Cabildo of Santiago decided to recognize it as official. Partly thanks to the studies and work of the “Amigos do Camiño da Ría de Muros e Noia” association . This distinction grants pilgrims who follow this route the possibility to receive the Compostela. As it happens with all the other official Jacobean Routes.
One of the peculiarities that differentiates this route from other ways is that the pilgrimage can begin from two different points. One in the northern part of the estuary and the other in the south. Hence the fork shape. If we see the route on a map. Pilgrims who choose this route can decide whether to start the way in the fishing village of Muros (in the Muradana variant). Or start the pilgrimage in Porto do Son (the Sonense variant). To obtain the Compostela it will be necessary to walk both sections.
Another feature of this unique route is that: as it has recently been recognized as an Official Route of the Camino, it is in constant development. An attraction for curious and adventurous pilgrims who like to discover new routes and paths.
