Walk the English Way, from Ferrol to Santiago

The English Way is called like this because it used to be the preferred path for those pilgrims coming from Northern Europe, from places like England, Ireland or the Scandinavian countries.

After a long journey, usually by boat, they used to disembark in the port of Ferrol or Coruña, and from there they continued the way to Santiago de Compostela.

Nowadays, those pilgrims that want to qualify for the Compostela (pilgrim certificate) they would need to start in Ferrol, to walk at least 100 km.

It is an alternative route, that we strongly recommend to those pilgrims that want to get away from the crowds and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Arrival in Ferrol, starting point of the English Way.

The first walking day is the longest one; it is possible to split it in two walking days. We recommend to visit the port of Ferrol before leaving the city, and stop at the Monastery of San Martiño de Xubia in Neda, right on the way.

Pontedeume – Betanzos (21 km)

This is a coastal stretch, with pleasant views. Before reaching Betanzos we will be able to visit the church of San Pantaleón de las Viñas, an iconic point of the English Way.

Betanzos – Bruma-Mesón do Vento (28 km)

This is a quiet walking day, through small rural areas; some of it will be in parallel to the river. There is a mix of paved roads and unpaved rural paths.

Bruma-Mesón do Vento – Sigüeiro (24 km)

The route will take us through small rural villages, leaving behind chapels andcruceiros (transepts).

Sigüeiro – Santiago (16 km)

The last walking days is only 12 km long. This will allow you to arrive to Santiago early enough to enjoy the city. From Sigüeiro, you will feel the presence of the cathedral in the distance. When you get to Santiago do not forget to go to the Pilgrim’s Office with your Pilgrim Passport if you want to get your “Compostela” (Pilgrim Certificate).

Recommended to those who are looking for a less crowded way, full of history and tradition. A combination of coastal and interior landscapes. Perfect to discover some of the most emblematic places of Galicia, as Ferrol, Pontedeume or Betanzos.

Cómo llegar

Desde Santiago de Compostela Airport

Car or cab: 90km with an estimated duration of 1h.
Bus/train: Take the bus (LINE 6A) from Santiago de Compostela airport to the station stop. Frequency every 15′ and with an approximate duration of 20′. Another option is to take a cab to the station, with an estimated duration of 15′. There you can take a bus (MONBUS) to Ferrol, a journey time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. Another option is to take a train (RENFE) towards A Coruña – San Cristóbal, and there transfer to the train to Ferrol, a total journey time of 1 hour and 50 minutes. Desde A Coruña Airport

Car or cab: It is 50km with an estimated duration of 35 minutes.
Bus/train: Go to El Burgo-Santiago station and take a train (RENFE) to Ferrol, 1 hour trip. Another option is to take a bus (LÍNEA A4), 20′ to the Alfonso Molina stop. Desde Madrid Airport

Car or cab: 615km with an estimated duration of 6 hours.
Plane: Take a plane to A Coruña airport (1 hour trip), or to Santiago de Compostela airport (1 hour and 15 minutes trip). Consult the train and bus options available.
Bus: From T4 take the bus to A Coruña (ALSA), journey time 8h. For schedules and more information visit: www.alsa.es
Train: From T4 take the suburban train (LÍNEA C1) towards Chamartín (17′ trip). Once there transfer to the train (RENFE) to Ferrol, journey time 5h and 40 minutes. For schedules and more information visit: www.renfe.com

Repetir es la mejor reseña No hay mejor opinión que repetir la experiencia. Mi primera experiencia con ellos fue en marzo y ahora en septiembre repetí y volveré a hacerlo. Atentos, cumplen todo, modifican lo que les pidas a capricho

Perfecta para tener un Buen Camino Muy buena experiencia, nos organizaron el camino francés desde Sarria tal y como les pedimos saliendo todo perfecto y según lo esperado.

Destacar que fuimos con un bebé y en todo alojamiento contamos con cuna tal y como habíamos pedido.

experiencia muy positiva Hice el camino frances desde sarria, todo muy bien organizado, a media pension,
tanto hoteles y pensiones bastante correctas.
algunos de ellos tenian restaurante, y desde luego es una ventaja, ya que al termino de la etapa del dia podias comer alli,
y sino te hacen un vale para comer muy cerca del alojamiento.
desde luego muy recomendable.
