Pilgrims planning the walk always wonder what to pack for the Camino de Santiago

The preparation of the suitcase for any trip will always fill us with doubts about what to bring? What will be useful? What will be optional? And what is mandatory to bring?

Of course the answer the these questions can vary depending on the route you choose to walk, the period of the year weather conditions… there’s a big difference between walking the first section of the French Way in winter, and the Via de la Plata in summer!

Being a fairly long journey you must take the necessary precautions to avoid any against time and make the Camino to Santiago as pleasant as possible, so we bring you some tips on what to bring to make this journey an enjoyable experience.

What must you pack for the Camino de Santiago?

It is very important to choose a pair of shoes according to the walk to be made, the experts in this journey recommend the use of these shoes for at least 2 months before the Camino de Santiago, as this will allow the coupling of the shoes.

Mountain Pants:

Bringing comfortable and practical clothes will make you feel lighter for each of the daily trips.

Shorts or Short Trousers

They are perfect in summer time and will be useful if you want to take a good bath in any of the rivers that abound along the road: comfortable and simple for those days of abundant heat.


It is recommended to bring at least 2 t-shirts, the one you wear and a spare one.


Totally necessary for the use of restrooms and rest that you must take daily after walking, when you arrive to your destination.


It is important since a large percentage of people who leave is due to severe discomfort caused by blisters. Vaseline applied before undertaking your daily stretch can help you avoid the consequences of these uncomfortable injuries.

It is quite usual to see pilgrims along the Camino de Santiago using this tool. It depends on each walker, if you are just doing the last 100 km, walking poles are not really needed.


It could serve in summer time to combat the incessant sun.

The most recommended is one that is on an elastic band placed on the head, so you can have your hands free, and is used more than anything when you must start the day’s walk very early.

Although it is known that on the road it is best to be alone with yourself, it is also a good idea to capture the most important moments in photographs and to enjoy beautiful landscapes that nature gives you.

First aid kit for the Camino de Santiago

As in every trip it is absolutely necessary to bring a kit, in which you can take:

  • Gauze
  • Anti-inflammatories
  • Dermatological Antiseptics
  • Thread
  • Needle
  • Bandages
